Myth exerts a strong influence on my work. It addresses the inseparability of revelation (what we might nowadays call self-discovery), and struggle. A tension exists between the mythic source of inspiration and the act of visual creation: A brushstroke should never stand in for an idea.

I'm concerned as much with the space between objects, with passages of pure paint, as I am with the designated subject. I want to create semi abstract passages of paint that act as a sort of fluid extension of the presence of the figures. I want to blur the distinction between figure and ground. During the process of painting, a series of imperatives assert themselves; formulations of color and balance and weight drive the painting on to its conclusion.
