Portraits
Whenever I start a portrait, I'm astonished by the beauty of the person in front of me. I don't mean this in terms of conventional
ideas of beauty but rather, as an awareness of the extraordinary complexity of the individual before me.
A portrait is an exploration, testing and touching the surface, delving into what lies beneath. The beginning of a portrait
is a very intimate confrontation. The sense of self collected and presented to the viewer by the subject is a fragile construction,
one which a curious artist can occasionally penetrate. It is a psychological encounter but it is an encounter which expresses
itself through paint.
